A.M. Homes Master Class Recording

American author A.M. Homes gave a special Craft Talk for the students of the International Writers’ Collective on 14 April 2018 at Boekhandel van Rossum in Amsterdam. You can listen to a recording of the talk below or it is also available as a podcast from various services and from our own feed.

Homes is the author of seven novels, two short story collections and a memoir and she was a writer and producer on the Showtime series The L Word. Her stories have appeared in The New YorkerMcSweeney’s and Harpers among others. She’s been the recipient of numerous prestigious fellowships and awards. In 2013, she beat out Zadie Smith, Barbara Kingsolver and Hilary Mantel to win the Women’s Prize for Fiction (formerly the Orange Prize) for her novel May We Be Forgiven.

The talk, a conversation between Homes and our Director, Sarah Carriger, covered craft in May We Be Forgiven, Homes’s process and advice for writers, including:

  • how to tell if you have a novel on your hands or just a short story that’s gone rogue,
  • the joys and dangers of research,
  • the challenges of memoir,
  • why writing ‘likeable’ or even ‘relatable’ characters shouldn’t be your first (or even your second) concern,
  • how humour can let you tackle really dark material,
  • what it means to leave room for the reader, and
  • how to make time for your writing when you have a family.
