Netherlands literary scene – September 2022

We’re thrilled to be able to resume our reporting on international literary events in Amsterdam and elsewhere in the Netherlands for September 2022. Events are in English unless otherwise noted.   • Orhan Pamuk comes to Amsterdam & The Hague to discuss his latest novel, Nights of Plague. Pamuk is the author of The Black Book, The New Life, I’m called Carmine, Snow and The Museum of Innocence. His work has been translated into more than fifty languages. In 2006 Pamuk won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
  • Karen Joy Fowler comes to Amsterdam to discuss her most recent novel, Booth, with American historian Katy Hull. The novel centers on the Booth family and its most infamous son, John Wilkes Booth, the man who killed US President Abraham Lincoln. Fowler is best known as the author of the best-selling novel The Jane Austen Book Club. Her latest novel Booth has been longlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize for Fiction.
  • “No one leaves home unless there’s a shark’s mouth at home.” Those are the words of Somali-British poet Warsan Shire on the European refugee crisis in 2015. Shire is London’s first Young People’s Poet Laureate, winner of the African Poetry Prize and the youngest fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. She will read from her debut collection Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head: Poems.
  • ILFU is the largest literary festival in the Netherlands. Recurring festival elements include Book Talks with international authors, the NK Poetry Slam and the closing event, Night of the Poetry.
  • American novelist and essayist Jonathan Franzen kicks off the 2022 International Literature Festival Utrecht with a discussion of his latest novel Crossroads.
