Netherlands literary scene – September

Here’s our rundown of upcoming international literary events in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht for September 2019 and beyond. Events are in English unless otherwise noted.   • Colson Whitehead – the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist will be speaking at on Monday, 9 September, 20:00 at the TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht. Note: a portion of this programme may be in Dutch
  • OpenMicMonday – poetry, music and stories in Dutch, English and French (new performers welcome) on Monday, 9 September, 20:45 at Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah – the American author discusses his story collection Friday Black (one of the best books of 2018, according to the Guardian and Time Magazine) on Tuesday, 10 September, 20:00 at De Nieuwe Liefde, Amsterdam
  • Int’l Open Stage – an open mic night with poetry, stories, songs and more in whatever language you want on the theme of ‘Shine Your Light’ on Tuesday, 10 September, 20:30 at ACU, Utrecht
  • Colson Whitehead & Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah – Whitehead  & Adjei-Brenyah, acclaimed author of the story collection Friday Black, will be appearing on Wednesday, 11 September, 20:00 at Spui 187, The Hague
  • Colson Whitehead – will be speaking at the Brainwash Festival on Thursday, 12 September, 19:00 at the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam
  • Word Up. Edition Dare – spoken word poetry in English on Thursday, 12 September, 19:00 at Checkpoint Charlie, Amsterdam
  • ABC Open Mic – your chance to go public with your book, song or poem on Friday, 13 September, 18:00 at the American Book Center, Amsterdam
  • OutSpoken Berlin Edition – featuring 5 diverse spoken word artists from Berlin on Friday, 13 September, 20:00 at
    Doka, Amsterdam
  • Jazz & Poetry Sunday – hosted by the jazz/spoken word trio Vignette! and featuring poet Tirsa With Poet CK on Sunday, 15 September, 19:00 at Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • OpenMicMonday – poetry, music and stories in Dutch, English and French (new performers welcome) on Monday, 16 September, 20:45 at Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  •  Katie Roiphe: Disappointing the Feminists – the American novelist and essayist will be giving the annual SPUI25 lecture on  Friday, 20 September, 20:00 at the Aula – Oude Lutherse Kerk, Amsterdam
  • South African Writers – 7 South African writers speak about their work on Sunday, 22 September, 15:00 at de Balie, Amsterdam. Note: some of this programme may be in Dutch.
  • OpenMicMonday – poetry, music and stories in Dutch, English and French (new performers welcome) on Monday, 23 September, 20:45 at Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • Creative Writing Course, Tuesday evenings – 8 weeks of inspiration and learning starting 24 September, 18:30-20:30 at Boekhandel van Rossum, Amsterdam
  • Int’l Open Stage – an open mic night with poetry, stories, songs and more in whatever language you want on the theme of ‘Humanity’s Suicide note’ on Tuesday, 24 September, 20:30 at ACU, Utrecht
  • Banned Books & Literary Walking Tour – join historian Mary Sobiechowski for a tour of Amsterdam’s most interesting literary landmarks on Wednesday, 25 September, 10:00 at the Embassy of the Free Mind, Amsterdam
