Netherlands literary scene – June

Here’s our rundown of upcoming international literary events in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht for June 2019 and beyond. Events are in English unless otherwise noted.   • The First Art-Zine & Indie Selfpublishing Festival – featuring authors, artists, and independent publishers on Saturday, 1 June, 11:00 – 17:00 at Paper Fetish, Amsterdam
  • OpenMicMonday – poetry, music and stories in Dutch, English and French (new performers welcome) 3 June, 20:45 at Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • A.E. Housman and the Land of Lost Content – an evening of poetry and commentary celebrating the life and work of one of England’s best-loved poets on Tuesday, 4 June, 19:00 at Waterstones, Amsterdam
  • Belonging in the Mess II – reflections on mental illness in relation to societal structures with poets Jane Lewty and Çağlar Köseoğlu and others on Friday, 7 June, 18:00 at Perdu, Amsterdam. Note: some of this programme will be in Dutch.
  • Sunday Read-in – a bookshop transforms into a cozy reading den with soothing, live acoustic guitar improvisations by De Sfeermaecke on Sunday, 9 June, 13:00 at Paper Fetish, Amsterdam
  • VERSO live journal – the season finale featuring poet E. Tracy Grinnell, poet and musician Malik Ameer Crumpler, writer Clementine E Burnley, and artist Kerri Rosenstein on Sunday, 9 June, 19:00 at Mezrab, Amsterdam
  • GRRLS GRRLS GRRLS W/ FIERY TONGUES – annual poetry festival on Sunday, 9 June, 20:00 at Rough Night Press, Ruigoord
  • OpenMicMonday – poetry, music and stories in Dutch, English and French (new performers welcome) on Monday, 10 June, 20:45 at Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • Something unearthly about today: An evening with Eileen Myles – the the internationally renowned American poet will be discussing their latest collection Evolution on Tuesday, 11 June, 20:00 at Perdu, Amsterdam
  • Int’l Open Stage – an open mic night with poetry, stories, songs and more in whatever language you want on Tuesday, 11 June, 20:30 at ACU, Utrecht
  • End of Year Open Mic Night – share your story or poem on Wednesday, 12 June, 19:00 at the VU Debatcentrum, Amsterdam
  • Poetry International Festival – featuring some of our favourite poets such as Rita Dove and Patricia Lockwood, 13-16 June, Rotterdam. Note: some of this programme will be in Dutch
  • Story Structure Course – a 1-day course for those who struggle to start, finish or revise their short stories (includes useful tips for novelists too) on Sunday, 16 June, 10:00 at Boekhandel van Rossum, Amsterdam
  • Day of Writing and Publishing – a full afternoon focusing on the practices of publishers and publishing houses, editors, writers, and many other facets of the literary industry, featuring Karen Kao of the International Writers’s Collective and poet Frank Báez on Monday, 17 June, 13:00 – 18:00 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
  • OpenMicMonday – poetry, music and stories in Dutch, English and French (new performers welcome) on Monday, 17 June, 20:45 at Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • Radical Read-in with Eileen Myles + Screening “The Trip” – poet Eileen Myles and Perdu invite you to bring reading materials and join them for a collective silent reading experience on Wednesday, 19 June, 16:00 at Perdu, Amsterdam
  • Valeria Luiselli – the Mexican author will be discussing her new book Lost Children Archive on Wednesday, 19 June, 20:00 at TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht
  • Valeria Luiselli and Frank Báez – both authors will be interviewed in English and will be available for book signing on Thursday, 20 June,  20:00 at De Constant Rebecqueplein 20A, The Hague
  • UprisInk Takes Over Vondelbunker – a night of poetry and music by artists from across Europe and beyond on Friday, 21 June, 19:00 at Vondelbunker, Amsterdam
  • Panashe Chigumadzi – the Zimbabwe-born South African novelist and essayist will be discussing her work, including her award-winning debut novel Sweet Medicine on Sunday, 23 June, 19:00 at the Biljmer Parktheater, Amsterdam
  • OpenMicMonday – poetry, music and stories in Dutch, English and French (new performers welcome) on Monday, 24 June, 20:45 at Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • Queer Open Stage: Midsummer Night – a special night for queer poets, writers, singers and performers of all varieties; as long as the act is seven minutes or less and is in Spanish, Russian, English or Dutch, every performance is welcome on Tuesday, 25 June, 20:00 at ACU, Utrecht
  • ABC Open Mic – your chance to go public with your book, song or poem on Friday, 28 June, 18:00 at the American Book Center, Amsterdam
  • We The People… Presents: The PoeTree 2.0 – come listen and share your poetry, story or spoken word piece on Friday, 28 June, 19:30 at the big tree at Drie Vreugdenpad, in Vondelpark, Amsterdam
  • Summer Reading & Anniversary Party – come help us celebrate two years as the International Writers’ Collective on Sunday, 30 June, 17:00 at the Mezrab, Amsterdam
