Netherlands literary scene – January

Here’s our rundown of upcoming international literary events in the Netherlands for January 2019 and beyond. Events are in English unless otherwise noted. Most ask that you register; some require tickets.

  • Word Up – an open mic night with poetry, music and performances on the theme of  ‘nostalgia’ on Thursday, January 3, 19:00 at Checkpoint Charlie, Amsterdam
  • Sydney Lowell & Kevin Groen perform their poetry on the spot guided by improvised jazz music on Sunday, January 6, 18:30 at Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • New Year’s Open Mic Monday – poetry, music and stories in English, Dutch and French, new performers welcome on Monday, January 7, 20:00 at Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • Int’l Open Stage: It’s in the Cards – an open mic night with poetry, stories, songs and more in whatever language you want on Tuesday, January 8, 20:00 at ACU, Utrecht
  • Level I Creative Writing Workshop, Thursday evenings – 8 weeks of inspiration and learning from 10 January – 14 March, with a two-week hiatus 21 & 28 February, taught by Inge Lamboo 18:30 – 20:30 at Boekhandel van Rossum, Amsterdam
  • ABC Open Mic – share your poetry or story on Friday, 11 January, 18:00 at the American Book Center, Amsterdam
  • Winter Reading, poetry and fiction by students and faculty of the International Writers’ Collective, Friday, 11 January, 20:00 at Boekhandel van Rossum, Amsterdam
  • Open Mic Monday – poetry, music and stories in Dutch, English, French and Spanish, new performers welcome, 14 January, 20:30, Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • Level I Creative Writing Workshop, Tuesday mornings  – 8 weeks of inspiration and learning from 15 January – 19 March with a hiatus 19 & 26 February, taught by Karen Kao, 10:00 – 12:00 at Boekhandel van Rossum, Amsterdam
  • Literary Salon Amsterdam: Catcher in the Rye – the words from J.D. Salinger’s classic novel are combined with music courtesy of the New European Ensemble on Wednesday, 16 January, 20:30 at CC Amstel, Amsterdam
  • Jennifer Clement – PEN International president and award-winning writer will be discussing her novel Gun Love, courtesy of the John Adams Institute, Wednesday, 16 January, 20:00 at Paradiso Noord, Amsterdam
  • Jennifer Clement Master Class – Clement will be offering insights into technique in her novel Gun Love as well as discussing her process and writing more generally on Thursday, 17 January, 11:00 at the IWC, Amsterdam. Note: Due to space constraints, this class is currently open to current & former students of the International Writers’ Collective.
  • Winternachten Literature Festival – featuring poet Adam Zagajewski (Poland), novelist Jennifer Clement (US/Mexico) and writers from another 8 countries, 17-20 January at various locations in The Hague
  • Open Mic Monday – poetry, music and stories in Dutch, English, French and Spanish, new performers welcome, 21 January, 20:30, Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • Level I Creative Writing Workshop, Tuesday evenings – 8 weeks of inspiration and learning from 22 January – 26 March with a with a hiatus 19 & 26 February, taught by Rebecca Clyburn, 18:30-20:30 at Boekhandel van Rossum, Amsterdam
  • The Platonic Open Stage – an open mic night with poetry, stories, songs in any language on the theme of philosophy on Tuesday, January 22, 20:00 at ACU, Utrecht
  • Amsterdam Quarterly – reading and launch party for the 8th edition of the magazine, which promotes art and writing in Amsterdam, on Friday, January 25, 18:00 at the American Book Center, Amsterdam
  • Open Mic Monday – poetry, music and stories in Dutch, English, French and Spanish, new performers welcome, 21 January, 20:30, Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • SOS: The Int’l Open Crêpe – an open mic night with poetry, stories, songs and more in whatever language you want (plus crêpes!) on Tuesday, January 29, 20:00 at ACU, Utrecht

February

  • Pop Up Poetry – a monthly spoken word event (details on the lineup and the theme TBC) on Friday, February 1, 19:00 at Paper Fetish, Amsterdam
  • Guillermo Arriaga – the Mexican author and screenwriter will present his latest novel El Salvaje (The Savage) on Saturday, February 2, 20:00 at Zaal 3, The Hague
  • Amsterdam Noir book launch – René Appel together with other contributors, will present Akashic book’s new noir anthology on Sunday, February 3, 15:00 at the American Book Center, Amsterdam
  • Open Mic Monday – poetry, music and stories in Dutch, English, French and Spanish, new performers welcome, 4 February, 20:30, Labyrinth, Amsterdam
  • The Worlds and Works of Octavia E. Butler – a discussion of the American science-fiction novelist and short story writer’s work on Friday, February 8, 20:00 at Perdu, Amsterdam
  • Wine & Poetry Tasting – celebrate good wine combined with tasteful poetry on Saturday, February 9, 17:30 at Paper Fetish, Amsterdam
