This Level III poetry course runs from 22 September through 17 November, with a hiatus 20 October. The course meets Wednesday evenings online from 20:00 – 21:00 Amsterdam time. Class size is 6-10 people.

REQUIREMENTS

This course is open to poets who have completed at least two terms of our Level II Poetry or equivalent courses. If you’re new to our school or are not sure if you qualify, please reach out before registering.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

In Level III, poets bring together the skills acquired in Levels I and II. The focus is on deepening the emotional connection in your poetry and further developing your own voice and material. Weekly reading assignments and in-class discussions provide inspiration and help you to hone your technique.

Level III has no set curriculum—each term is different. We will be using a required text for the next several terms: Into English, edited by Martha Collins and Kevin Prufer (Graywolf Press, 2017). This international anthology, which provides multiple translations of each poem, offers unique insights into nuances of style and approaches to craft. If you have difficulty obtaining the textbook then please let us know and we’ll assist (the cost is around €25).

There will also be time to tackle your questions on process and publishing, such as how to put together a collection and pitch to publishers.

HOW IT WORKS

You can join the online sessions via computer, phone or tablet. If you can’t attend the live session, don’t worry—you’ll receive access to a recording so you don’t miss anything.

You’ll share your work by the following Monday (up to 2 pages single-spaced, double-spaced for prose poetry) via our online classroom and will receive written feedback from the teacher and fellow poets before the next live session. You will also be strengthening your editor’s eye through critiques of at least two other poets each week.

OUR REFUND POLICY

No matter how early you register, if something changes and you can’t join the course, you can let us know at least 72 hours before the first class (so we can offer your spot to someone else) and we’ll give you a complete refund. You can find the full details of our generous refund policy in our terms.
