This Level III poetry workshop runs from 12 October – 7 December 2023 with a hiatus on 23 Nov. The workshop meets Thursday evenings online from 20:00 – 21:00 Amsterdam time. Class size is 6-10 people.

REQUIREMENTS

This course is open to poets who have completed at least two terms of our Level II Poetry or equivalent courses. If you’re new to our school or are not sure if you qualify, please reach out before registering.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

In Level III, the focus is on developing your own voice and material. We will no longer use exercises or writing prompts but rather weekly reading assignments and in-class discussions to provide inspiration and help you to hone your technique.

Level III students should be ready to bring an enhanced degree of discipline to their writing practice. This entails:

  • taking responsibility for your own work process,
  • paying finely tuned attention to the course readings
  • offering generous critique to your fellow students
  • and investing in the continued revision of your own work.

Over the course of Level III, we will address issues such as how to put together a collection and pitch to publishers.

For the next several terms, our readings will come from Into English, edited by Martha Collins and Kevin Prufer (Graywolf Press, 2017). This international anthology, which provides multiple translations of each poem, offers unique insights into nuances of style and approaches to craft.

HOW IT WORKS

You can join the online sessions via computer, phone or tablet. If you can’t attend the live session, don’t worry—you’ll receive access to a recording so you don’t miss anything.

You’ll share your work by the following Tuesday (up to 2 pages single-spaced, double-spaced for prose poetry) via our online classroom and will receive written feedback from the teacher and fellow poets before the next live session. You will also be strengthening your editor’s eye through critiques of at least two other poets each week.

OUR REFUND POLICY

No matter how early you register, if something changes and you can’t join the course, you can let us know at least 72 hours before the first class (so we can offer your spot to someone else) and we’ll give you a complete refund. You can find the full details of our generous refund policy in our terms.
