9 free publishing opportunities for May & June

Contests and journals for poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction with May and June deadlines

There’s a little something for everyone in our diverse round-up of open calls and contests with deadlines in May and June 2024. Many have themes, most are open to simultaneous submissions, and none charge fees. Too soon for you? Note: We are a creative writing school and compile these lists for the benefit of our students. We’re happy to answer questions about our courses but please don’t send us your publishing queries or submissions :). Instead, click on the green links to go to the publication’s website and look for their submissions page. The Orange & Bee is open for poetry, flash fiction and short stories, including experimental work. They are especially interested in work “from or about diverse perspectives and traditionally under-represented groups, settings, and cultures, written from a non-exoticising and well-researched position”. Chosen submissions will receive $50 for poems, $80 for flash fiction, and $.08 per word for short fiction. They respond quickly, usually within three weeks of submitting. Deadline for Issue #2 is 31 May 2024, and if you miss that one, they’ll be open for submissions for issue #3 from August 1 to 15.

Weird Little Worlds is calling for submissions under the theme THE ROBOTS WERE RIGHT: TALES OF UNSTOPPABLE TECHNOLOGY. They want engaging prose (500-5000 words) that addresses the ways technology has infiltrated our lives. Think Twilight Zone or Black Mirror. The deadline for submissions is 31 May 2024. Chosen submissions will receive $.05 per word.

The Dream Foundry Emerging Writers Contest is open for speculative short fiction from writers who have little to no experience with paid publication. You can send in one story of up to 10,000 words. They’ll choose ten writers from their global submissions who will be featured at their Flights of Foundry annual convention. Cash prizes will also be rewarded to first ($1000), second ($500), and third place ($200). Deadline: 27 May 2024.

Tint Journal, the literary magazine for writers writing in English as their non-native language, is looking for poems, short stories, and personal essays on the theme of BORDER/LANDS from the borders within one individual being to the borders between us and outer space – where do we meet, where do we part, and what is happening in-between? Deadline: 31 May 2024.

Superpresent quarterly online magazine is seeking poetry, fiction and essays on the theme of ZING! You can send in up to 3 poems or one short story or essay of between 500 and 2000 words. Deadline: 1 June 2024.

Anomaly Poetry Anthology is looking for poetry, fiction or nonfiction on the theme of RITUALS. Think nostalgia, memory, and the things that connect us across time, space and history. Send up to two poems or one short prose piece of 800 words or less. Deadline: 8 June 2024.

Pure Slush wants your original fiction and essays from 150 to 1000 words (you can submit up to 3) and prose poetry from 80 to 1000 words (submit up to 5) on the theme of DEATH. Selected pieces will be published in print and ebook formats in the final volume of Pure Slush’s Lifespan anthology series. No simultaneous submissions but the editor decides quickly, usually within a few weeks. Deadline: 20 June 2024.

Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction Short Story Contest is open for stories that imagine a future of abundance, reformation, adaptation, and hope, through equitable climate progress. The word limit is 2500 to 5000 words. Winners are offered the opportunity to participate in Spring Creek Project’s Environmental Writing Fellowship and Residency, including a writing residency at the Cabin at Shotpouch Creek in Oregon. Deadline: 24 June 2024.

The Fountain Magazine Essay Contest is open for essays on the theme of HOME. What is your perception of home and what does it mean to you? Word count is between 1500 and 2500 words. There will be cash prizes for first place ($1000), second place ($500), third place ($300), and two honourable mentions ($150 each). Deadline: 30 June 2024.
